School Streets
At Bournes Green, we have a School Streets programme in place which is overseen by Southend Council.
A School Street restricts access to motorised traffic on the roads outside schools during school drop-off and pick-up times during term time only. The scheme aims to create a safer and less congested street around the school and encourage active modes of transport. It should also have a positive impact on the quality of air around our schools.
The Order came into effect in April 2023 as follows. 'The introduction a Pedestrian and Cycle Zone and a Prohibition of Vehicles at: Burlescoombe Road, from its junction with Moat End to its junction with Chadacre Road Operation times: Monday to Friday, 8.10am – 9.10am and 2.40pm – 3.40pm'
We have a dedicated team of School Street Marshals who ensure a yellow barrier is placed across the road from 8-25am to 8-55am and 2-55pm to 3-25pm. This is to ensure absolute safety for the busiest time of the prohibition period. When the road is closed, we strongly ask that children and parents continue to walk on the pavement and not in the road. This is to ensure the children maintain an understanding that walking in a road is not safe and also if we are required to let key vehicles on the road during it's closure (e.g. emergency services). Thank you for your support with this.
We are always looking for volunteers to support the scheme. If you are interested, please contact Mr Denchfield directly or Helen Woolhouse, Lin Kulahcigil and Elspeth Spall via the School Office who will explain more about the scheme.
Training and high visibility jackets are provided prior to any marshal duties and we can also support where parents need to drop off/collect their children whilst covering a School Streets duty. Even if you can only support once a week, we would be very grateful!
